Sounds too good to be true, but within the last 30 years scientific research has given credibility to what tea drinkers around the world have known for centuries. Green tea benefits your health, it is good for you! It is nature’s gift, a simple but extremely effective way to promote human health. Since green tea has little caffeine and is one of the mildest of the teas, there are no adverse side effects either.

Any Green Tea and Weight Loss?

No. Not just any green tea. It must be a green tea of high quality, and the highest quality green teas available are undoubtedly matcha teas from the Japanese region of Uji in the Kyoto prefecture. Matcha tea is the richest green tea source of nutrients and antioxidants. Matcha differs from other green teas in that the whole leaf is ground and consumed as part of the beverage, as opposed to other (most) types of green tea where the leaves are steeped and then the tea is consumed.

How does green tea help me lose weight?

Obesity is a problem with the imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. It is a metabolic disorder and a strong risk factor for other life-style related diseases. Several studies have suggested that the flavonoids and caffeine in green tea can help elevate metabolic rate, increase fat oxidation and even improve insulin activity. The catechins in green tea are responsible for stimulating fat oxidation through the inhibition of an enzyme called O-methly-transferase. It also increases the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) to increase fat oxidation.

There have been many studies carried out over the last 30 years which clearly show the favourable effects of green tea catechins (GTC) on body weight. A recent study reported an average of 1.3 kg weight loss over a 12 week period when 270 to 1200mg/d of green tea catechins (GTC) was consumed. Other studies have shown decreased levels of nutrient absorption in the gastrointestinal tract when green tea catechins (GTC) are consumed, explaining the anti-obesity effects of green teas. Catechin intake decreases body fat!

Why the quality of the green tea is so important

Phytochemicals are compounds that are produced by plants (“phyto” means “plant”). They are found in fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, and other plants. The concentration of beneficial nutrients in green teas, the phytochemicals, varies greatly and the main contributors to the levels of these nutrients being sufficiently present are:

  1. The harvest season
  2. The age of the plant
  3. The climate
  4. The environmental conditions
  5. The processing conditions

So, when you are buying a green tea as a healthy choice alternative always be sure to check where the tea originated. As mentioned previously the highest quality green teas in the world come from the Uji region of Kyoto, Japan. This geographic region, with its naturally mineral-rich soil, misty climate, warm days, and cool nights are ideal for green tea plants. You will not get the health benefits associated with green teas if consuming a low quality alternative. Fact! Be sure to brew your green tea at the correct temperature though as using boiling water can destroy those precious beneficial catechins.

So, consuming quality green tea has many health benefits, and even if you are not struggling with obesity problems why not drink it anyway?
